Earlier this week, the poker community got perhaps the clearest sign that the 2021 World Series of Poker could happen in a normal environment. The buzz was taken from a Tweet from poker info expert Kevin “Kevmath” Mathers, stating that he had spoken to a WSOP executive, who said a live edition will happen if COVID-19 conditions continue to move in the right direction.
Here is the Twitter post that made the poker world excited. He says that the 2021 World Series of Poker is for sure happening, but later in the year than normal.
There are still a lot of obstacles before the event can actually get a green light. Nevada would first of all have to continue to ease restrictions on social distancing. The state recently increased capacity in casinos to 35%, up from 25%. By mid-month, it will increase to 50%, and then on May 1, the local governments will be allowed to determine their own COVID-19 restrictions. That could set up Nevada to soon remove large gathering restrictions and setting the stage for a live 2021 WSOP.
So after last year, when the poker’s biggest event of the year was moved online to WSOP.com and GGpoker, we might see players hit the live felt this year.
The WSOP did not make any official replies on the statements yet.
