Jason Koon is in seventh heaven after winning yet another Triton title. This time the 37-year-old American poker pro took down the $100,000 Main Event in North Cyprus for more than $2.4 million.
Koon won two tournaments during the Cyprus series; the first came in a $20,000 7-Handed event, and he recorded an additional 2nd place in $25,000 Pot Limit Omaha, where Chris Brewer denied him a hat-trick.
Nevertheless, Jason now overtook Stephen Chidwick in the Ivan Leow Player of the Year. “I was here a little under a year ago when we lost Ivan,” Koon said, choking back tears after the tournament wrapped. “Ivan was a good friend of mine. And walking through these halls every day, I feel a little bit emotional about that. Just the title of Player of the Year, it gets me emotional. I miss the guy.”
The Main Event played out over three days, and 101 entries built up a prize pool of $10.1 million. Koon started the final day as the second to last in chips with only 15 big blinds, but he still studied all night, as he revealed before the start, even if it might last only one hand. And it lasted way more than that, as he doubled twice early, once through Chidwick.
From then on, it was just a matter of his strong hands to hold and avoid big final table dramas. He got to heads-up with Sam Greenwood, and after making a deal, the battle lasted only one hand, as Canadian moved all-in with AK, and Koon called it off with QT and flopped a queen that earned him $2,451,082, the Main Event trophy, and an exclusive Jacob & Co timepiece.
