Beyonce Releases “Texas Hold ’Em” Song During Super Bowl LVIII

It has been one week since a thrilling overtime victory by the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. What does the Super Bowl have to do with poker? Apart from poker professional Sean Perry losing a $1.1 million bet on 49ers winning, we have a connection thanks to Beyoncé.

During the Super Bowl ad, the 32-time Grammy winner chose this occasion to announce her upcoming album Act II, featuring two new singles “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ’Em”, and it’s the latter that particularly intrigues the poker world.

With the song, Beyoncé pays homage to her Texas roots and uses poker metaphors to explore themes of love.

This ain’t Texas, ain’t no hold ’em
So lay your cards down, down, down, down
So park your Lexus and throw your keys up
Stick around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
And I’ll be damned if I can’t slow dance with you
Come pour some sugar on me, honey too
It’s a real life boogie and a real life hoedown
Don’t be a bitch, come take it to the floor now, woo, huh

It’s too soon to say if “Texas Hold ’Em” is going to have any impact on the poker community. However, it’s impossible not to mention Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” at this point, which at the height of its popularity, was played in poker rooms worldwide, announcing level changes at tournaments with its catchy “p-p-p-poker face”. But Beyoncé’s new entry into the country music scene has sparked some controversy with mixed reactions from the country music industry.

Poker has always found a way into pop culture and all music genres. From Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler”, to Motörhead’s “Ace of Spade”. From O.A.R.’s “That Was A Crazy Game of Poker” to Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas”, and many more.
