Every year, when the curtain falls on the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, the best European players gather at the European Poker Championship, commonly known as Poker EM. This will be the 33rd iteration of this prestigious poker festival, which has been hosted at Casino Velden in Velden am Wörthersee, Austria, since 2015. Over the years, the event has garnered a rich tradition, and the picturesque setting of Lake Wörthersee adds a unique charm to the high-stakes competition, making it a must-visit for poker enthusiasts.
Poker EM has established itself as a cornerstone of the European poker calendar, and over 2,000 poker players from 20 different countries are expected to flock to Casino Velden from July 16 to 28, where they’ll compete for seven European Championship titles in various poker variants.
The centerpiece of the series is the No-Limit Hold’em Poker Championship Main Event with a buy-in of €2,750, spanning multiple days starting from July 24. Last year, Italian Nicola Angelini triumphed in the Main Event, beating a record-breaking field of 309 players to secure a prestigious title and €154,385 money prize.
Other highlights include the No-Limit High Roller European Championship with €5,400 buy-in, a €2,200 PL Omaha European Championship, and one of the biggest ladies’ poker events in Europe, the €330 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em Ladies European Championship.
The European Championship started in 1990 with a Seven Card Stud Championship, which remains part of the schedule today and has a €440 buy-in. Of course, no modern festival is without a Mystery Bounty event, first introduced in 2023 and returning this year with €1,100 buy-in.
There will be other notable side events, with €550 Showdown on Lake Wörthersee being the most popular one, attracting 816 players last year, and the festival will conclude with the Wörthersee Poker Party, featuring a €330 buy-in.
Casino Velden, the venue for Poker EM, is renowned for its excellent facilities and hospitality. Poker players can enjoy gourmet dining at the casino’s acclaimed restaurant “Die Yacht” and indulge in leisure activities such as motorboat rides on Lake Wörthersee. During the event, many gastronomic treats will be offered, such as Carinthia’s “Brettljause”, a suckling pig roast, and the culinary delights cooked up by Marcel J. Vanic’s 3 Gault & Millau toques kitchen.
