Interview With Norwegian Poker Professional Jon Kyte

With EPT Barcelona coming up in August, we asked Jon Kyte to give us some plans for the event where he will represent the PokerPro.cc team and to share his experience he had on this year’s WSOP in Las Vegas.

Jon Kyte is a professional poker player from Norway. He started his professional poker career back in 2017 and plays a wide variety of poker games with achieving amazing results in all poker variations. His biggest achievement this year is finishing 4th in the Eureka Main Event in Prague for €131,900. He also won his first EPT trophy this year in Prague in the H.O.R.S.E. event. His next mission is the EPT in Barcelona, where he will represent our team and we will report about him and other Norwegian players.

Jon also streams his poker games in Norwegian on Twitch. Make sure you give him a follow.

First of all, tell us a bit about your poker career. When did you start playing professionally, do you play online also, and do you only play tournaments or any cash games also?

I started out just playing for fun with friends, I never played online in the beginning, but soon after I started to take poker more seriously. I’m playing full time live poker since 2017, but of course I play online during the big series as well as Sundays. I mostly play tournaments live and online, but I only enjoy the big tournaments and the big festivals, so when there’s nothing cool to play, I just play cash games. A regular day for me while I’m traveling is tourneys during the day and once I bust I go and play cash games.

I saw you just came back from this year’s WSOP. Tell us a bit about how was it was, were you happy with your results and overall performance at the tables?

39 days in Las Vegas this year. I played just over 20 tournaments and grinded cash games every night that I didn’t make it to day 2 of an event. Overall, it was a lot of fun, played all the different mixed games possible during WSOP and the cash game action was very good. Not very satisfied with the results thought. I got a 10th place finish as my best results and according to PokerNews I was chipleading at least 4 tournaments without getting a final table which is a bit disappointing, but we’ll get ’em next year.

How would you compare the new WSOP venue to the previous one?

I enjoyed staying at Bally’s and playing at Bally’s & Paris way more than Rio. Here we were on the Strip where a lot more is happening, more food and drinks options and here we could just walk from venue to venue instead of always taking an Uber to get to all the nice places on the Strip.

What are the present Norway laws about poker now? We all know that your country was very strict about poker because they considered it the same as all the gambling games.

Online poker is still pretty good, we have some deposit and withdraw problems, but for me it’s not an issue. As long as you’re used to it and know what to do it’s ok to grind from back home. Playing live poker isn’t as good though, we have a lot of “underground” poker clubs which is nice for cash games, but I wish we would have regulated live poker as well. At least we have the Norwegian Championship once a year in Oslo, Norway.

We will see you at EPT Barcelona in August playing for PokerPro.cc Team. Are you excited about the event?

Very excited. Played both EPTs this year winning my first EPT trophy. Barcelona is the biggest stop and it’s such an amazing event and venue. Spain during the summer is amazing and being able to walk straight out on the beach after playing some cards is perfect

What do you enjoy doing besides poker? Any sports/hobbies?

Love watching football, and playing volleyball, padel, golf and frisbeegolf. Also love watersports at home during the summer.

What is your favorite memory from your poker career?

If I should choose one memory it would be the kickstart of my career, winning the Nordic Championship of Poker back in Prague in December 2017.

What are your plans for the future?

I don’t think much about my future, maybe I should have a much clearer plan, but I just enjoy travelling and play poker. The only plans I like to make is booking the next poker stop and finding the best venues and festivals. I might move abroad though, let’s see.

Jon is also a Betsafe online pro and ambassador, representing the online poker site for several years now.
