The Accident and the Sentence
Dutch poker player Rutger Hennen was in a car crash five years ago when he was driving at high speed and hit the teenage girl on the bike, who died on the spot. The first sentence for Hennen was five months and 18 months without a driving license, but the Public Prosecutor appealed, and the sentence was extended to six months in prison and two years without a driving license. Hennen appealed and asked to do community service but was rejected. In the courtroom, Rutger Hennen said he thinks about the accident daily and feels guilty.
The judge did not consider it proven that the accident happened because Hennen was looking at his phone. However, he drove “considerably carelessly and inattentively”. Quote Magazine says that he already reported to prison.
Return to Poker
The accident happened in 2019; since then, he didn’t have any recorded live cashes until 2023. In 2024, Hennen became the WPT champion when he won €1,1100 No Limit Hold’em—WPT Prime Main Event in Amsterdam for $228,354.
He also added three more cashes from Irish Poker Open 2024, Dublin, and EPT Monte Carlo 2024. He is currently ranked 137th in Holland’s All-time Money List.
Becoming Multimillionaire
Hennen was ranked 30th among Quote Magazine’s Top 100 Young Self-Made Millionaires. His company, Meubelzorg, made a lot of money selling different chairs for the elderly. A European private equity fund’s investment in his company boosted his net worth to $54 million.
