It was a good run for Wild Rose Country – Alberta was five for five in WSOP Circuit Calgary Main Events coming into this sixth edition of the big game. The streak is over now thanks to Chatham, Ontario’s Nicholas Teeuwen, who put on a strong performance today to take it down among 911 entrants, taking home $CAD228,734 in the process.
Teeuwen has been very close to a ring here a couple of times already. He had two third-place finishes last May at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino, as well as three final table finishes in Circuit Online events on WSOP.ca in Ontario. Now, he finally made it through to the big finish here in May 2024, breaking the Alberta winning streak in the process.
Today’s win was his biggest cash by far, following his previous best runs for $22k at Deerfoot in the Fall Super Stack last year and $20k in the $1k at WSOP-C Calgary last May. In fact, this win today represents close to 3 times his previous lifetime earnings, according to the HendonMob.
The final hand of the game was a bit of a dream spot for him. He was the big leader and runner-up John Scalise shoved his short stack from the small blind. Teeuwen looked down at pocket kings and snapped it off, way ahead.
It wasn’t without sweats, though. Scalise was in with Q♠4♠ and flopped a gutshot draw before turning his queen, giving him a lot more outs for the river than he started with. The river bricked for Scalise, though, and Teeuwen was the proud owner of the new WSOP-C ring.
