WSOP Coming to Fourth Largest City in North America

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is coming to Toronto, Canada, for the first time from March 22 to April 1, 2024. There will be eight WSOP Circuit Ring Events at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto (GCCRT), which local players still refer to as Woodbine (old casino and racetrack).

There will be eight scheduled ring events with no side events or satellites. For all eight Ring Events:

  • No Limit Hold’Em, 9-handed tables.
  • Starts at 11 AM EST, with 100/200 + 200 Big Blind Ante.
  • If the Big Blind (BB) has less than two big blinds, the ante is posted first, with the remaining amount constituting the big blind. The EPT posts the BB first instead of the ante first.
  • Scheduled breaks every 2 hours for 15 minutes.
  • Unlike the 30% withholding taxes in the US for Canadian and other foreign players, Canada has no withholding.

Buy Tickets in Advance

With 45 tournament tables, each accommodating nine players, the maximum capacity is 405 players for six of the events. Registration starts on Wednesday, March 6, at noon in the second-floor poker room. Here’s a valuable tip:

  • Players should secure a ticket ASAP for all the desired events, including the $250 Re-entry Event #1 and Day 1A, March 28, of the $2,000 Main Event #7. It’s worth noting that if the initial 405 tickets for Event #1 are sold out, only those players can re-enter (as alternates).

Players have to buy the tickets in person with cash or chips. Tickets are non-transferable.

The total prize pool is estimated at $3.9 million. For Main Event #7, the prize pool will be $2,126,250 if all 405 seats are sold out for each of the three freezeout flights. If a player busts out of Day 1A, they can buy for Day 1B or 1C if any ticket is left.

The $600 6-Max and $3,500 High Roller are capped at only 270 players. The prize pool will be $850,500 for the High Roller if all 270 seats sell out.

With six Ring Events being freezeouts, this is actually one of the better WSOPC structures.  Only the two $250 Events, #1 and #5, are unlimited re-entries for the first 405 capped players. Regarding fees, the 12.5% rake of the $2,000 Main Event is higher than the 10.9% and 11.8% of WSOP Calgary and Playground’s $1,700 Main Events, respectively. The schedule and structure sheets are available here.

The new poker room boasts 30 cash game tables with a maximum rake of $20 (10%). This could be reduced to five tables during the festival. While there are free self-serve drink stations away from the room, ordering drinks from a server incurs a charge. There are currently no call-ins, and the event is not yet listed on Bravo or Poker Atlas.

GGPoker will exclusively operate the online qualifying tournaments and host brand ambassadors, including local poker hero Daniel Negreanu. GCCRT is Canada’s newest and largest casino resort and one of the largest in North America. The destination is home to 328,000 square feet of gaming space, including 4,800 slot machines, 175 live table games, VIP rooms, and sports betting kiosks. It is a 400-room, 11-floor hotel; like Las Vegas, it has daily resort fees.
