It’s no secret that poker players like to either swap action with each other or buy a part of their buy-ins in order to get a share of the player’s earnings. This way, stakers can earn passive income without even playing at the tables.
Most often such arrangements are made between poker friends or in poker stables, but now it’s possible to stake players directly in GG’s software (Betkings, GGPoker, Natural8), which eliminates any doubt of stakers getting money from players.
An interesting way to make money by staking players through GGPoker is that we can search their nicknames on a tracking site like Sharkscope, to see if he or she is a winning player or not, so we can decide if it’s profitable for us to invest in them.
The best option is to invest in players who sell their action without a mark-up, which means they sell 1% of their buy-in for the 1% profit. If we see on Sharkscope that a player has a tournament Return On investment (ROI) of 10% and he is selling action without any mark-up, then we earn 10 cents on every dollar invested.
If we buy $50 of action daily from a player with 10% ROI, thats $1,500 wagered per month and $150 in profit.
It’s important that a player who we decided to invest in, has a sufficient number of tournaments played, in order to more accurately determine their ROI. When we find such a player, GG has an option to follow him, so we can always stay up to date when player registers and sells action for future tournaments.
But first we have to review a lot of players to find the best ones selling action. Some info is already provided by GG and their PokerCraft, where you can see their winnings, staking history, comments from their backers, and other tournament history.
Or you could buy a subscription to a site like Sharkscope, where you will have a better understanding if player is actually profitable or not, and you can search them on multiple poker sites, if they are using the same nickname there.
Just keep in mind that player will be affected by poker variance, which means you will be affected as well, therefore it’s necessary to monitor their play and results on weekly basis. Players who have a higher ROI will experience smaller swings in the long run, because they will have less variance and thus your profits will be more consistent too.
Of course, we can also invest in players who are charging a mark-up, as long as their ROI exceeds offered mark-up. We should be careful when a players moves to a higher limit and let him build a sample size first, before we can reassess whether he or she is profitable at those stakes.
It’s good to find more players with equal ROI, to diversify your investments and to not put all your eggs in the same basket. Keep in mind that good players with highest ROI can realize their edge better in long/slow tournaments, so focus on that type instead of (hyper)turbo structure. If a player has an overall ROI of 10%, there is a good chance that number will be higher in slow-paced tournaments.
