Twitch Slots Viewership Drops 87% Resulting Ban of Unregulated Gambling Sites

Twitch ban on gambling streams involving unregulated slots, roulette, and dice games came into effect on October 18 and viewership of a popular Slots category has fallen by 87%.

The numbers before were absolutely staggering. The peak was reached in August 2022 with an average of 68,000 viewers and more than 50 million watched hours. It was a top 10 watched category, just bellow Fortnite and ahead of World of Warcraft, two absolute giants in the gaming world.

And it would probably grow even more, if not for a gambling drama involving famous Twitch streamers, which then prompted the whole debate about problematic gambling streams that resulted into an official ban.

The most popular slots streamer is Trainwreckstv, who had a multimillion-dollar deal with Stake.com, crypto gambling site that was among the ones effected in the ban. Train put one last marathon stream in on October 17 that lasted more than 35 hours and at the moment already has 2 million views. His peak viewers stopped at 42,000 while Slots category recorded 130,000 viewers.

Viewership immediately dropped after he logged off and in the next four days Slots were pulling about 8,500 average viewers for an 87% fall since August/September. We expect the numbers to fall even further when Twitch removes streamers who are still streaming unregulated games or adds additional sites to their prohibited list.

To put the numbers from a poker perspective. Poker category had a 2022 peak in September with an average of 9,000 viewers and 6.4 million watched hours. At that time, it was on 57th place among all Twitch categories and that was during the poker’s busiest time of the year with WCOOP on PokerStars, WSOP Online on GGPoker, Triton High Stakes series, and more.
