Defying 66/1 odds at the start of the day, Luke Porter staged an impressive comeback to clinch the 2024 GUKPT London Main Event, taking home £116,710. Porter’s victory came after a heads-up against Tom Hall in a field of 529 players, each paying a £1,250 buy-in.
Day 3 started with 29 players, and Hall led the pack with a commanding 1,177,000 chips. Joe Hindry followed with 632,000 chips, while Luke Porter was at the other end of the spectrum, holding a mere 149,000 chips, equivalent to just 12 big blinds.
Despite his shorthanded position, Porter’s journey through the final day was nothing short of miraculous. With 20 players remaining, he had only 20 big blinds, and before the final table, he held a modest stack of 12 big blinds. Yet, he managed to reach the final table with 21 big blinds, while Tom Hall maintained a dominant lead with a stack twice as large as his next competitor.
Thomas Clack was the first to exit the final table in 9th place for £10,500 after his straight and flush draw failed against Reet Raniwala’s set. Hindry’s attempt with AQ fell short against Hall’s AK, leading to his 8th-place finish for £12,435. Mingrui Cen, holding AJ, couldn’t overcome Vince Meli’s AQ and exited in 7th place, earning £14,370.
Martins Adeniya’s run ended in 6th place for £17,460 when his J8 couldn’t outmatch Meli’s AJ. Despite the odds, Porter steadily accumulated chips, ultimately challenging the leaders. Kully Sidhu’s A5 couldn’t hold up against Porter’s Kings, resulting in Sidhu’s 5th place finish and a £25,200 prize. Meli then eliminated Reet Raniwala in 4th place for £37,855 with his pocket tens against Scotsman’s Q9. Meli himself was ousted in 3rd place for £58,690 by Tom Hall.
Entering heads-up play, Porter held a commanding 2:1 lead over Hall. The final hand saw Tom’s A7 suited fall to Luke’s A8, with Porter turning an eight to secure the title and £116,710. Hall earned £86,595 for his runner-up finish.
