LIVE Reporting: Pure Poker Tour Series #5

PPT staff have barely had time to break down the tables from PPT #4 at Pure Casino Yellowhead and it’s almost time for the penultimate series of the 2024 season. Series #5 is across town at Pure Casino Edmonton and is a shortened schedule from the full series with just one week of poker action and 11 events.

The first PPT branded action for Series #5 kicks off at 1 pm Sunday, Oct 13 with a 1 in 10 satellite game for $T equivalent to entry in all open events for the series. Buy-in for the game is $430 ($390 + $40) and players start with 25k in chips for 30-minute levels.

There is more satellite action on Oct 14 with main series action kicking off on Oct 15 with the Seniors First at noon, an open NLH game starting at 4 pm, and a satellite game at 7 pm. That kicks off seven days of PPT action that includes the ever-popular 6-Max and PLO Big Bounty games as well as the two-flight Main Event and the $2k “Series Saver” High Roller to finish it out.

    Tim Arnold

It was a bit of a cooler on the flop that sent start-of-day leader Tim Arnold to the rail in 6th place. Ed Zurawell raised the button to 50k and Arnold came along from the small blind.

It all kicked off on the 910J flop when Arnold bet 80k, then snapped it off when Zurawell shoved a covering stack. Arnold flopped two pair with ten-jack, but Zurawell was on a set of nines. Arnold couldn’t find the cards he needed and hit the rail in 6th place today.

It was a limped pot to the J4A flop and both players checked to the 5 turn. Ed Zurawell led for 30k and got the call from Tim Arnold to see J on the river.

Zurawell fired 80k and got the call, showing jack-six for trips. “I had jack-seven,” said Johnny Dalphond with a smile.

In the final hand of Level 21, Kim Graham raised to 45k from the middle and Kevin Lee called from the button. Graham check-called for 30k on the 2610 flop, but when he checked the K turn, Lee sized it up considerably to 200k. Graham called and checked the 7 river.

Lee shoved his stack for 780k sending Graham into the tank. “Tough call with one pair,” he muttered as he considered his next move. “I worked really hard to get these chips.” Eventually, he laid it down with a king face up, while Lee slid his cards to the muck face-down as he collected the pot.

    Victor Xie

I arrived at the table with action on the flop reading 498 and a pot of more than 400k. Big blind Victor Xie was facing a bet from button Johnny Dalphond that was big enough to put Xie all in, and he made the call.

Xie was on pocket aces, but Dalphond was open-ended to the jack-high straight with jack-ten. Dalphond paired his ten on the turn, but then spiked a 7 for the straight on the river to crack Xie’s rickets and send him to the rail.

Jason Tran open-shoved for 90k from the hijack and the big stack Johnny Dalphond repopped it from the cutoff to 200k. Tran was on pocket fours for a coin flip against the ace-king for Dalphond.

Tran called for a four and found one on the flop, and while the turn gave Dalphond a wheel draw, Tran’s flopped set ultimately held on a board of 934210.

  • Xie Pauses Massage

    Level:21 (10,000/20,000/20,000)

Victor Xie opened early to 40k while getting a massage. Kevin Lee called from the button to see a flop of A93. Xie bet 25k and got a call before the 10 turned up.

Xie motioned for the massage to pause and straightened up in his chair, studying the board before tossing out 70k. Lee folded, revealing a jack as he did, and Xie resumed his massage as he raked in the pot.
